Nedachlebice – a Slovácko Village of Ponds and Forests

Published ·Updated

Nedachlebice lies about ten kilometres northeast of Uherské Hradiště, where the landscape of Slovácko begins to rise toward the western foothills of the Vizovice Highlands. The village sits at the confluence of the Zlámanecký and Lipinský streams in the northern part of the Prakšice Highlands Nature Park, and fewer than 800 people live here. At first glance it looks like an ordinary village, but those who stop here will discover ponds teeming with life, forests right on the doorstep and a community that has been collecting awards in the Village of the Year competition in recent years.

Eight hundred years of history

The first written mention of Nedachlebice dates from 1209, when King Ottokar I donated the village to the Olomouc Chapter. Over the following centuries several noble families held it – the Kužel family probably built a fortress here in the 14th century, and the village was also owned by the lords of Korotín and the Januar family of Strachnov. For the longest period, Nedachlebice belonged to the Uherský Brod estate of the Counts of Kounic.

The village was once known for both winegrowing and fishpond farming. The vineyards disappeared from the area at the end of the 17th century, but their legacy lives on in the village's emblems to this day.

The Olšovec and Lipina ponds

Nedachlebice once had nine ponds. Today there are three – Olšovec I, Olšovec II and Lipina. The village restored and refilled both Olšovec ponds in 2000 and 2001, and they have become a popular destination for walks, both for locals and visitors. Besides offering a peaceful stroll along the dams, they also have ecological value: they improve the microclimate of the surroundings and are home to kingfishers, grass snakes and many amphibians. Bring binoculars – the blue flash of a kingfisher over the water is worth the patience.

Forests, meadows and cycling routes

Forests cover roughly half of the village's land, with the rest made up of meadows, orchards, pastures and fields. The landscape of the Prakšice Highlands is ideal for easy hikes as well as bike rides – several local marked cycling routes pass through the village, and from here you can easily reach neighbouring Mistřice, Březolupy or head back toward Uherské Hradiště.

The Church of St Cyril and Methodius

The village's landmark is the modern Church of St Cyril and Methodius, built between 1994 and 1998. A dedication to the missionaries so closely tied to Slovácko and Great Moravia will surprise no one. As you stroll through the village, keep an eye out for small sacred monuments too – crosses and statues that recall the piety of earlier generations.

Village of the Year in the Zlín Region

Nedachlebice can also boast success in the Village of the Year competition. In 2023 it won the Blue Ribbon for community life in the regional round, and in 2025 it won the regional round outright. As the winner for the Zlín Region, it then advanced to the national final. The awards say something that visitors often only sense – behind the village's tidy appearance stand active local associations and people who care about their home.

Tip: Combine a visit to Nedachlebice with a walk around the Olšovec ponds and continue along the cycling route to Mistřice. It makes a half-day outing that families with children can manage too.
