Morning Fog Above Lofer: A Timelapse from Loderbichl
Published
The last morning of February, freshly dusted meadows, and the Saalachtal valley still wrapped in fog. From the terrace of the Loderbichl mountain lodge, I filmed the sun breaking through the clouds, stirring the air in the valley, and the fog gradually tearing apart above the rooftops of Lofer.
Loderbichl above Lofer
Berggasthaus Loderbichl sits at roughly 1,020 m above sea level, next to the mid-station of the Almbahn cable car, in the Almenwelt Lofer area of Austria's Salzburg region. It is about 2.5 km from the centre of Lofer, and the town lies roughly 400 metres below you. You can reach the lodge by car, ride up by cable car, or come up on foot or by bike.
From the terrace you look straight down onto Lofer and further along the valley of the Saalach river, ringed by snow-covered limestone peaks. The whole valley is spread out before you like a map, without any climbing at all.
What's happening in the shot
On a clear, calm night the air near the ground cools down, and the cold, heavier air flows down the slopes to the valley floor. It settles there as if in a bowl, and if it is humid enough, fog forms. Above it sits a warmer layer of air. This is called a temperature inversion.
In the morning, the sun first warms the upper slopes. The heated air begins to rise and the fog starts to move. It breaks up into flat ribbons that drift over the forests and eventually dissolve. In real time the process is so slow that you barely notice it. In a timelapse, you can see the valley literally breathing.

A tip if you want to experience it yourself
Morning fog over a valley is most likely after a clear, windless night. Be in place before sunrise, because the fog disappears faster than you'd expect. Since you can drive up, you don't have to wait for the first cable car. In winter, though, be prepared for a snow-covered road and make sure your car has winter equipment.
